Export answers and highlights as CSV
Download a study's answers or highlights as a CSV file to open in Excel or another spreadsheet program.
You can download a study's answers, or its highlights, as a CSV file. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets or your analysis tool.
Export answers
- Go to the Responses tab.
- Optional: set filters and click Show. The export only includes the entries that match.
- Click Export CSV. With filters set, the button reads Export CSV (filtered).
The file downloads straight away. Its name includes the study name, "answers" and the date.
One row per answer
The file has one row for each answer, so an entry with four questions takes four rows. Rows are in the same order as Responses, newest entry first. The columns are:
- Entry: the entry number in Zolensa. Rows of the same entry share it.
- Participant: the study code. When the study shows first names, owners and researchers also get the first name.
- Group
- Test participant: Yes for test participants
- Task
- Day: the study day the entry was sent on
- Entry number: 1, or higher when the task can be answered more than once
- Sent (UTC)
- Question number: Q1, Q2 and so on, counted within each task
- Question
- Type: text, single, multi, rating, video, photo or audio
- Answer: the text, the chosen options separated by semicolons, or the rating. For files, how many were sent.
- Files: a link to each video, photo or voice note. The links work for people who are signed in to Zolensa and have access to the study.
- Entry tags: separated by semicolons
- Highlights: how many highlights this answer has
Tasks, questions and options are in the study's main language.
Export highlights
- Go to the Highlights tab.
- Optional: filter by Tag, Task or Participant and click Show.
- Click Export CSV.
The file has one row per highlight, with these columns: Highlight, Participant, Test participant, Task, Day, Question, Start, End, Length (seconds), Note, Tags, Link, Added by and Added (UTC). The link opens the highlight in Zolensa.
The highlights export includes the 500 newest highlights that match your filters.
Opening the file in Excel
The file is saved as UTF-8 with a marker that tells Excel so. Accents and other scripts show correctly when you open it with a double click.
If a cell starts with =, +, - or @, Zolensa puts an apostrophe in front of it. This stops a spreadsheet from reading a participant's text as a formula.
Filters and limits
- The answers export follows every filter on Responses, including Test answers. Choose Hidden to leave test answers out. See Test participants.
- One answers export holds up to 20,000 entries. For bigger studies, export by task or by day.
Who can do this
Owners, researchers and moderators can export. Clients cannot.
Note: Exports contain participants' personal data. Keep the files safe and delete them when the project no longer needs them.
To download the videos, photos and voice notes themselves, see Download all files as a ZIP.
