Add tasks

Plan what participants do each day, when each task opens, how long it stays open and who gets it.

A task is what participants do on a given day, such as "Show us your breakfast". Each task has one or more questions. This article shows how to add tasks and set when they open.

Add a task

  1. Open the study and go to the Tasks tab.
  2. Click + Add task.
  3. Fill in the settings below.
  4. Click Create task.

The task opens in the builder, where you add its questions. See Question types.

Owners and researchers can add and change tasks. Words are written in the study's main language. You add other languages on the Translations tab.

What participants see

  • Task title: up to 150 characters, for example "Show us your breakfast".
  • Instructions (optional): up to 2000 characters. Tell participants what to do and why.

When it opens

  • Day: from 1 to 90. A new task suggests the day after your last task.
  • Opens at (optional): a set opening time, in the participant's own local time. If you leave it empty, the task opens at the study's Daily reminder time, also in the participant's local time.
  • Stays open for (hours): from 1 to 168, counted from when the task opens. 24 is one day and 168 is a week. The default is 24.

Days are counted from each participant's own start, so people who join late still get every task in order. Day 1 is the day a participant signs the consent form, or the fieldwork start date if that is later.

If a participant does not send a task before it closes, it counts as missed.

Repeatable tasks

Tick Repeatable when participants can send the task more than once, for example "every time you shop". Use Most entries per participant to set a limit from 1 to 50. Leave it empty for no limit. A task that is not repeatable takes one entry from each participant.

Who gets it

If the study has participant groups, you see Who gets it. Tick the groups that should get the task. Leave them all unticked to send it to everyone. See Participant groups.

The task list

The Tasks tab lists tasks by day. Each task shows when it opens, how long it stays open, how many questions it has, and who gets it. A task with no questions shows "No questions yet". Participants do not see tasks without questions.

  • To change the order of tasks on the same day, use the up and down arrows.
  • To move a task to another day, click Open, then Task settings, and change the Day. The task goes to the end of that day.
  • To change any other setting, click Open, then Task settings, and click Save settings.

Delete a task

While the study is a draft, click Delete on the task, then Yes, delete. This deletes the task and its questions. Once a study has gone live, tasks cannot be deleted.

Tip: Try every task as a participant before you go live. See Preview a task as participants see it.

Participants get a reminder when a task opens, if reminders are on for the study. See Reminders.
