Participant groups
Split participants into segments, such as Users and Non-users, so each group gets its own tasks.
Groups split a study's participants into segments, such as Users and Non-users. Use them when each segment needs different tasks. If everyone does the same tasks, you do not need groups.
Add a group
- Open the study's Overview tab.
- Scroll to Participant groups.
- Type a name, for example "Users", and an optional description.
- Click Add group.
Group names can be up to 80 characters, and each name can be used once per study. Descriptions can be up to 255 characters. Participants do not see group names.
Owners and researchers can add and change groups.
Rename or delete a group
- In Participant groups, click Edit next to the group.
- Change the name or description and click Save.
To delete a group, click Edit, then Delete group. You can only delete groups while the study is a draft. Participants in a deleted group are left without a group.
Put participants in a group
You can choose a group in three places:
- Group when you add or edit a participant. See Add participants.
- The group column when you import a spreadsheet. The value must match a group name on the study's Overview. See Import participants from a spreadsheet.
- On the Participants tab: tick participants, choose Move to a group under With the ticked participants..., choose the group and click Apply. Choose No group to take them out of their group.
The Group field and the Move to a group action only appear once the study has at least one group.
Give a task to certain groups
- Open a task's Task settings, or add a new task.
- Under Who gets it, tick the groups that should get this task.
- Leave every group unticked to send the task to everyone.
- Click Save settings or Create task.
The task list shows which groups each task is for, or Everyone.
Note: Participants without a group only get tasks that are for everyone. Check that every participant is in the right group before they start.
Groups when you review
Groups help you after fieldwork too:
- On Responses, filter by a group, or by No group. See Review responses.
- On Messages, send a message to one group, or to participants without a group. See Messages and follow-up questions.
- The answers CSV export has a Group column. See Export answers and highlights as CSV.
