Show a question only after a certain answer

Show a follow-up question only when a participant picks a certain option in an earlier choice question.

You can show a question only when a participant picks a certain answer earlier in the same task. For example, ask "Why did you choose tea?" only to people who picked "Tea". Everyone else skips it.

Add a condition

  1. Open the task from the Tasks tab.
  2. Make sure the task has a Single choice or Multiple choice question above the question you want to show, and that it has its options.
  3. Click Edit question on the follow-up question.
  4. Under Show this question, choose the answer, for example Only if answered "Tea". The answers are grouped by question number, such as Q1.
  5. Click Save question.

The question now shows "Only shown if question 1 is answered "Tea"". To remove the condition, choose Always and save.

The Show this question field only appears when there is a choice question above the one you are editing.

How it works for participants

  • With a single choice question, the follow-up appears when the participant picks that answer.
  • With a multiple choice question, the follow-up appears when that answer is one of their picks.
  • If the participant changes their answer, the follow-up disappears again.
  • A hidden question is skipped, even if it is required.
  • If the earlier question is itself hidden by a condition, the follow-up stays hidden too. This lets you build a short chain of follow-ups.

In the Participant preview, a question with a condition is marked "Shown only after a matching answer above". The preview does not react to answers, so add yourself as a test participant to try the real flow. See Test participants.

What you can and cannot do

  • A condition can only point at a single choice or multiple choice question.
  • That question must be above the follow-up, in the same task.
  • Each question can have one condition, based on one answer.

Conditions cannot use text, rating, photo, video or voice note answers, answers from other tasks, or several answers at once.

When a condition is removed

Zolensa removes a condition that no longer makes sense:

  • If you move the follow-up above the question it depends on, you see "Moved. A condition was removed because it pointed at a question that is now below."
  • If you delete the question it depends on.
  • If you remove the answer option it depends on.

After changing the order or options, check your follow-up questions and set their conditions again if needed.

Tip: Make the follow-up question required if you need everyone who picked that answer to reply. People who did not pick it are never asked.

See Question types for the settings of each question.
